Barcelona is a vibrant and multicultural city, but it faces a concerning demographic crisis. According to the latest data from the City Council, in 2025, births in Barcelona reached their second lowest level since 1900, with only 11,012 births. This decline is alarming, representing a 1.3% drop compared to 2024 and moving further away from past birth peaks. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the city's natural balance is negative, with 3,549 more deaths than births last year. The population of Barcelona remains stable at 1,729,963 inhabitants, but this number is primarily sustained by immigration. Deputy Mayor Jordi Valls points out that many residents were registered without actually living in the city, leading to a data regularization. Despite the slight population loss, the reality is that birth rates continue to decline. This phenomenon is observed in nearly all districts, except for Ciutat Vella, where there are more births than deaths. The negative trend in birth rates has persisted since 2017, raising serious questions about Barcelona's demographic future.
