FC Barcelona failed to secure the signing of Dutch defender Ruud Nijstad from Twente on the final day of the transfer window. The Catalan club made an 8 million euro offer that the Dutch side flatly rejected, as reported by Mundo Deportivo on Tuesday.
Barcelona, who lead La Liga with 9 points from three straight wins, were looking to strengthen their central defence. However, Twente remained inflexible and refused to even enter negotiations for the 18-year-old player. Fernando Polo, the newspaper's deputy director, confirmed the failed attempt: "El club azulgrana hizo un último movimiento para fichar al central holandés pero su club no aceptó la propuesta azulgrana".
Why did Twente reject the offer?
Twente considers Ruud Nijstad a talent with a market value far exceeding the 8 million euros offered by Barcelona. The Enschede club views the 1.95-meter tall defender as an asset that could reach much higher figures in the future. Some media have even suggested Twente aims to obtain around 50 million euros if the player eventually moves to the English Premier League.
This uncompromising stance led Barcelona to abandon any further negotiation attempts. The Catalan team does not plan to seek another defender for the remainder of the market, trusting their current squad. With 12 goals scored and only 2 conceded this season, the defence has performed well, but the board was seeking a future reinforcement.
How does Barcelona's defence look now?
Barcelona's defensive lineup for the current campaign includes Pau Cubarsí, Andreas Christensen, Eric García, Gerard Martín and Jules Koundé. Ronald Araújo, meanwhile, is on loan at English club Liverpool. Additionally, Álvaro Cortés is close to completing his transfer to Belgian side Antwerp.
This configuration will have to suffice for immediate commitments, including the upcoming match against Valencia at Mestalla on September 6th. You can check the full schedule on our fixtures page. Valencia currently sits in sixteenth position in the table, presenting a significant challenge at home.
What does this failure mean for the market?
The transfer window closure leaves Barcelona without the young defensive reinforcement they sought. The 8 million euro offer for Nijstad represented a bet on the future, but Twente considered it insufficient for a talent they project from their academy. The Dutch club prefers to wait and develop the player, hoping for a more lucrative sale later.
Barcelona, for their part, maintains confidence in their current centre-backs. The defensive solidity shown at the start of the league, with three wins and only two goals conceded, supports this decision. The team leads the standings with a perfect record and a +10 goal difference, data you can see in detail in our standings section.
The next challenge is the trip to Mestalla to face Valencia on Sunday, September 6th, 2026.
