The teachers' strike in Barcelona intensifies with protests and traffic disruptions. Teachers vote clearly 'no' to the educational agreement. Three columns will leave from different points in Barcelona at 10 am to converge at 12 pm at the Arc de Triomf. The unitary demonstration will end in a large stage, inside the Ciutadella Park before reaching the zoo and the Parliament. CGT calls for 'paralyzing' Barcelona in the demonstration of this Friday. CGT and the Intersindical demand the 'immediate' cessation of the Education Minister, Esther Niubó.
The aspects that emerge after the negative result of the agreement are several. The teachers' discontent is genuine and very persistent, and a salary increase (75% of the 2,720 million euros more would go to wages) does not solve it. This difference has not been understood by the majority trade unions in the sector, which agreed on a principle of agreement rejected clearly now by the teachers. In contrast, the minority ones like CGT have had the capacity to mobilize the staff through the workers' assemblies. Therefore, the movement has radicalized.
Another aspect also emerges. The participation in the vote has been high, ten points higher than the one organized by Ustec in March for the strikes, but it is clear that it is not in line with a scenario of 'educational emergency' that the assemblies profess or a 'historical pact' that valued the Government.
Ustec admits that they rushed signing the agreement with Education. Ustec initially supported the agreement that was put to a vote for the teachers, but in the face of the clarity of the result, with more than 60% in favor of 'no', the spokesperson for the majority union, Iolanda Segura, admitted that they rushed signing it and passed the ball to the Government to resolve the situation: 'We have taken decisions that perhaps were not the most accurate. Now the department must re-evaluate it in these terms, and if we go back to negotiation, it must be to elaborate a new agreement'.
However, Ustec will not be present today in the meeting with the Department of Education and has assured that it prefers to focus more on the mobilizations convened during this Friday and postpone this meeting for next week. Nevertheless, they emphasize that they have no objection to continuing negotiating and finding a solution to the conflict.
Niubó: 'The right to strike must be compatible with the right to education and mobility'. The Education Minister, Esther Niubó, has emphasized in statements to RAC1 that 'we must see how we guarantee a peaceful start to the next course and also a peaceful end to the course'. In addition, she has made it clear that 'one thing is the right to strike, but it must be compatible with the right to education and mobility. If we talk about blocking, we are talking about something else'.
Niubó: 'The moment of negotiation has ended'. Esther Niubó, Education Minister, has assured in RAC1 that 'the moment of negotiation has ended', since 'we had an agreement of 4 of the 5 main trade unions'. Therefore, she has emphasized that 'the framework of negotiation that we had was sufficient and realistic to be able to advance'.
However, Niubó has said that in the new round of contacts with the trade unions that will take place this morning 'we will listen to the organizations', as well as to the families and other sectors, to find a solution to the conflict.
