Barcelona strengthens its goal with Joan García

Barcelona has announced the arrival of goalkeeper Joan García Pons, signed for €25 million. The keeper, born 4 May 2001 in Sallent de Llobregat, led the 2024/25 season with 146 saves, the highest in LaLiga and second across the five major European leagues.

How did Joan García reach Barça?

After stints in Manresa and Damm youth teams, García joined Espanyol at 15. He debuted in the Copa del Rey on 12 December 2021 and, after a season as starter that kept the club up, Arsenal offered €25 million in the summer of 2024. Espanyol turned it down and, a year later, Barcelona paid the same fee to acquire him.

What does his arrival mean for the club’s goal?

García becomes the ninth goalkeeper to guard both city doors, following Romà Solà and Oier Olazábal. His style, described by CE Sallent vice‑president Quim Bosch as “spectacular jumps on sand”, adds agility and confidence. Coach Xavi Hernández hopes he will cut goals conceded and push the team toward Champions League contention.

What future awaits him at Camp Nou?

The young keeper already debuted as the thirty‑third Joan in Barça history, first appearing in a friendly against Real Madrid on 3 July 2026. Fans expect his 146 saves from last season to translate into more points and, above all, a sturdier defence for the 2026/27 campaign.

How did his brother shape his career?

Joan grabbed the gloves at five, copying his older brother Lluís García, the local team’s keeper. That family choice set a path that took a boy from a 7,000‑inhabitant town to Spain’s top tier.

What market impact will it have?

García’s signing sends a clear message to European clubs: Barça is ready to invest in proven young talent. The rejection by Arsenal also shows Espanyol’s confidence in his future, though the new goal now is to cement the keeper as an undisputed starter at Camp Nou.
