At the 71st minute of the match between Barcelona SC and Liga de Quito at the Monumental Banco Pichincha stadium for the 22nd date of the Liga Ecuabet, referee Gabriel González awarded a penalty to Barcelona SC for a supposed handball by José Carabalí inside the area following a centre pass by William Vargas. The fact could have changed the outcome of the game entirely, which was 0-1 in favour of the visitors after Michael Estrada scored in the first minutes of the second half.
Johnny Quiñónez missed his shot and Erick Mendoza took advantage of the rebound to score, however, the goal did not go on the board as there was an invasion of the attacking Canarian team, correctly advised by the VAR.
The rulebook states that the player who invades the area before the shot is executed, will be breaking the rules of the game.
What happens when there is an invasion of a teammate? If the penalty execution ends in a goal, the penalty is repeated. But if the ball does not enter the goal, the game will be restarted with a free kick.
As the ball did not enter the goal (hit the vertical), the decision to not repeat the penalty was correct.
However, the key point is that Gonzalo Valle, the goalkeeper of LDU, did not have any part of his foot on the line of the goal at the time of the shot. In this case, and given the double infringement of the rule by both sides, the penalty had to be repeated.
