Joan Laporta has clarified FC Barcelona's stance on political expression in football, defending players' freedom of expression while positioning the Spotify Camp Nou as a candidate to host the 2030 World Cup final. The president made these statements in a joint interview on Catalunya Radio and Cadena SER.
Laporta directly addressed the controversy surrounding jerseys with the slogan 'Todos somos caballas', an initiative by Valencian businessmen that saw Real Madrid and Elche wear them in their last league match. Barcelona did not wear the jerseys in their recent 2-4 win at Levante, a result that keeps the team top of La Liga with 15 points from five games. "The club positions itself defending freedom of expression. Everyone should do what they believe they must do," the president stated. He clarified that the club respects acts being carried out, but players who wish to make a statement should do so privately, without using the institution.
Reaction to the Elche incidents
The president also addressed the serious incidents before the match against Elche on 23 August, where a club member was assaulted and had an 'estelada' flag taken from them. Laporta expressed satisfaction with the government's swift reaction, which described the events as incorrect and opened an investigation. "The images were chilling and I hope those responsible receive the punishment they deserve," he said. For Laporta, wearing a senyera, an 'estelada' or a Barcelona flag should be normal and respected as long as no hatred is expressed.
International ambition and tribute
Beyond the controversy, Laporta looked to the future with a clear ambition for the club's infrastructure. "The World Cup final should be held at the Spotify Camp Nou. It would be an international recognition we want to have," he declared regarding the bid for the 2030 tournament. In parallel, he announced that the stadium's press tribune will be named the Puyal Tribune in honour of the historic commentator.
The team, now on a five-game winning streak in the league, faces their next fixture away to sixth-placed Sevilla on 19 September. Laporta's statement sets out the club's line on a sensitive issue as the first team focuses on maintaining its flawless run of form.
