Barcelona filed a conciliation claim prior to filing a lawsuit for a crime of slander against Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez. The club refers to the statements made by the top executive of the white club in a press conference on May 12 and in an interview with a media outlet the following day. In them, Florentino Pérez accused Barcelona of corruption, of enriching referees and of always benefiting from the officials, in reference to the Negreira case. The goal of this claim is for Mr. Pérez to retract certain statements that he made with knowledge of their falsity and that are slanderous and offensive to the image and reputation of the club, Barcelona says in its statement. And Barcelona's acting president, Rafael Yuste, already warned last Tuesday that the legal department had prepared legal actions to defend itself against what it understood as the most terrible infamy. The Negreira case investigates the payments made by Barcelona over the years to José María Enríquez Negreira, former vice-president of the Referees' Technical Committee, through companies linked to him. The Prosecution suspects that these payments, which exceeded seven million euros between 2001 and 2018, may have had the objective of influencing the refereeing establishment, while the club claims that they corresponded to technical reports and advice on referees. So Barcelona is seeking to protect its image and reputation in this case. The club is determined to defend itself against Florentino Pérez's accusations and to demonstrate that his statements are false and slanderous. But the Negreira case is a delicate matter and Barcelona must be careful in its response. The club must demonstrate that its payments to José María Enríquez Negreira were legitimate and that there was no intention to influence the refereeing establishment.
